During CES 2024, Samsung unveiled its groundbreaking ‘Flex In & Out’ concept device, featuring a foldable screen reminiscent of the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s form factor. Distinct from Samsung’s latest clamshell-style foldable phone, this innovative smartphone has the ability to fold both forwards and backwards, thanks to its 360-degree folding display. This unique feature enables users to interact with the screen even when the device is folded.
To ensure the durability of the foldable device, Samsung subjected its panels to rigorous testing. The company conducted multiple tests, including folding the panels in extreme temperatures ranging from -20 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius, exposing them to sand, and immersing them in water. As part of the durability testing process, Samsung even bounced basketballs on the foldable panels.
While Samsung has not yet announced plans to incorporate the ‘Flex In & Out’ display technology into a future Galaxy Z Flip smartphone, the implications are promising. A folding phone with a single display could eliminate the need for configuring an outer display separately from the home screen, potentially allowing for more app usage even when the display is folded.
In addition to the ‘Flex In & Out’ concept, Samsung showcased other cutting-edge display concepts at CES 2024, including the Rollable Flex display. This technology, initially demonstrated in May 2023, allows the screen to be expanded up to five times its original size, resembling a scroll-like mechanism. Anticipated to enter mass production in 2025, bezel-less Rollable Flex smartphones could hit the market as early as next year, offering users a revolutionary display experience.
